The phrase, dog days, is from ancient Roman times and has nothing to do with canines but with the star, Sirius. Know as the Dog Star, this time of year can be hotter, drier and stormier. Pay extra attention to the garden, let the grass grow a little longer to preserve moisture and try to stay cool.
Our garden walk in July took us to the DePauw Nature Walk where wild snap dragon, poke and dandelion greens were observed. Poke and dandelion make good salad. Throw in some purslane if you find it and you have yourself a meal courtesy of mother nature. August will have us packing a picnic lunch and enjoying Terra Flora Gardens in Martinsville. Meet us at the clubhouse Thursday, August 8 at 9:30am. Please note the second Thursday is early in August. We wouldn't want you to miss out.
